Iowa real estate license and CE requirements
What the Iowa Real Estate Commission asks of licensees, with a link to the official source for every figure.

Iowa issues licenses for three-year terms and asks for 36 hours of continuing education in each: an 8-hour law update, a 4-hour ethics course and 24 elective hours. The rules come from the state's administrative code, which also caps distance or online study at 24 hours per term.
Iowa lets you bank surplus hours. Up to half of any excess, to a maximum of 18 hours, can carry into the next term, though never toward the law update or ethics requirements. A course counts only once per three-year period.

Rules change. The Iowa Real Estate Commission is the only authority on what you need to renew; where this page and the official source disagree, the official source is right. Blank figures say "Check with the Iowa Real Estate Commission" because we could not confirm them from an official source.
